Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown's development Team disbanded After the critically praised platformer's failure

Prince of Persia’s management by Ubisoft has seen many highs and lows, and it has frequently left players feeling a little perplexed. This year, two different Prince of Persia side-scrolling games were released within months of one other, which hurt the latter impression: Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, created by Ubisoft Montpellier, and The Rogue Prince of Persia, created by Evil Empire, a Dead Cells support studio.

The Lost Crown, which debuted in early January, earned positive reviews on most platforms and has a respectable Metacritic rating of 86.

“I’m extremely proud of our team’s work and passion at Ubisoft Montpellier to create a game that resonated with players and critics alike, and I am confident in its long-term success,” stated Abdelhak Elguess.

With three free content updates and one DLC that was released in September, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is currently nearing the end of its post-launch timeline. With the game’s recent Steam debut and upcoming Mac release this winter, we are currently concentrating on expanding its player base.

“The majority of the Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown crew members have moved on to other projects that will take advantage of their experience. We are aware that gamers adore this franchise, and Ubisoft is eager to release more Prince of Persia games in the future.”

The fact that Ubisoft appears to have panicked at the first sales and simply abandoned its bold new vision for the series entirely after assembling a comparatively small team that delivered a fantastic Prince of Persia is somehow very Ubisoft.

So what happens with Prince of Persia the lost crown?

Regretfully, there isn’t a Prince to claim “wait, that’s not how it happened” and go back in time to correct any errors. Although Ubisoft Montpellier is still working on the fabled Beyond Good & Evil 2, there is little information available regarding the projects to which the team members have been transferred. I have no idea what’s happening with that production.

Regarding Prince of Persia and Ubisoft, The Sands of Time continues to cast a shadow over the history of the series, in part due to the drawn-out and apparently disorganized production of a remake that is, astonishingly, currently scheduled for 2026. Oh, and the word “remake” is no longer in the title. Ubisoft expects that the Lost Crown will have a lengthy tail on Steam and gradually attract more gamers. However, that group and size could have done much more with the series than just create a really good one.
